Challenge

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) launched six pilots as part of their Information Futures (IF) programme to learn more about how to enable the MPS to make the data-based decisions required to deliver their vision to ‘Keep London Safe for Everyone.’

Our challenge was to make this complex subject real and relevant in a way that would help them communicate not just the purpose and progress of the pilots but how data could make a positive difference to policing London to a diverse matrix of stakeholders. These included key sponsors, senior leaders, front-line officers, back-office staff, local authorities and specialist partners.

Solution

We first wrote an easy to follow narrative to introduce the IF programme to the different stakeholders, help maintain and grow buy-in at every level and build the core idea of Data Driven Policing to support the Met’s overall vision.

We also created a suite of informative illustrations to help explain how the pilots worked and the benefits they were designed to bring. These were used at various roadshows and events to showcase the work going on across the service.

To help the team recruit people to the programme we wrote a ‘Speak Data Simply’ guide specifically for The Transformation Directorate (current and potential sponsors), senior leaders, the data community (analysts and developers) and front-line officers. We complied 4 versions, one for each group, designed to be an easy to follow set of talking points to help focus on what they would want to know, the culture being built and the new ways of working they would benefit from.

Finally, at the completion of the pilot phase, we co-wrote and designed the executive summary report, a comprehensive review of the progress, wins, challenges and recommendations.
